Early Equipment in Basketball

Baskets:
The game was played with Peach Baskets hung from the balconies. They were replaced by woven wire rims in 1892. Then, a year later, in 1893 iron rims were used. Open nets were also used. To speed up the game.

Backboards:
They used wood to replace the dented wires. In 1909 the glass backboard was introduced. Backboards were used flat against the walls. That allowed players to come down and make easy lay ups. It also allowed a lot of movement underneath the basket.

The Ball:
Obviously, the first balls used were soccer balls. Soccer balls were unsuitable for dribbling. In 1890 Spalding took over ball making. In 1929 basketballs were remade into a more suitable design. To be able to dribble and ball handle. Also, so the balls could be able to bounce, that made the balls bigger, lighter, and easy way to control/handle the ball. The men's ball is 30" and women's is 28" much smaller then the men's ball.
