Women Playing Basketball

In 1891 there was little opportunity for women to participate in athletics. Athletic girls who wanted to play a sport that related more to a guy's sport no one was in favor for that. As everyone started watching the game, girls wanted to play the game as well. While men's basketball was exciting, basketball for women started evolving. Senda Berenson decided to create her own of basketball for women. There were many problems she had distinguish. For example, the game was too rough and she believed women were not suitable for that way of playing. As the years passed by by 1894, basketball was spreading. Its influenced began to spread around the countries. Women's popularity grew and expanded.

Basketball Uniforms

In the 1800's wool jersey's and trousers were use. For shoes they wore "Chuck Taylors" which were converse and there are still people who were them. In the 1920's short tiny basketball shorts was spreading. In the 1940's facilities were producing materials, as nylon or polyester. They wanted to find something suitable for the player so they could be able to move. Since basketball is a motion sport. Basketball uniforms has changed because now you can custom made basketball uniforms for your school team or anything really.

Early Equipment in Basketball

Baskets:
The game was played with Peach Baskets hung from the balconies. They were replaced by woven wire rims in 1892. Then, a year later, in 1893 iron rims were used. Open nets were also used. To speed up the game.

Backboards:
They used wood to replace the dented wires. In 1909 the glass backboard was introduced. Backboards were used flat against the walls. That allowed players to come down and make easy lay ups. It also allowed a lot of movement underneath the basket.

The Ball:
Obviously, the first balls used were soccer balls. Soccer balls were unsuitable for dribbling. In 1890 Spalding took over ball making. In 1929 basketballs were remade into a more suitable design. To be able to dribble and ball handle. Also, so the balls could be able to bounce, that made the balls bigger, lighter, and easy way to control/handle the ball. The men's ball is 30" and women's is 28" much smaller then the men's ball.

Early Days of Basketball

In 1891, James Naismith, a professor that went to Springfield College in Massachusetts, created basketball. He created a concept to control a ball, dribbling around the court and passing. Also, passing it to a teammate, and get the ball straight into the basket. First, couple of games they used a soccer ball and peach baskets. High school and colleges started to play the game of basketball. Since the game grew everyone started to play, it also grew to be an aggressive sport. Referees started calling fouls when a player was hit. Anywhere that you would shoot from it would count as 2 points, a free throw had a value of 1 point. However, now we have a 3 point line which is counted as 3 points, the rest remained the same. The game was pretty simple just had to pass the ball to get in a position to shoot well. Everyone on the court that were playing had 24 seconds to shoot the ball and if not it would be the other teams ball. Players on the court were usually tall, fast-speed, jump higher, and to get close to the basket to score points.
